Clutch Blog Tour!!!

How long can you lie to yourself before it all comes apart?

In 2152 the avian race is on Earth looking for something stolen from them decades ago – their genetics. At the center of the search lies the Rural Republic; a small backwards farming country with high hopes of military domination and a penchant for illegal bioengineering.

19 year old Junco Coot is the daughter of the Rural Republic’s ranking commander. She’s the most foul-mouthed, wildly unpredictable and ruthless sniper the Rural Republic has ever trained. But when her father’s death sparks a trip into forbidden places, she triggers events that will change everything she knows to be true.

As an elite avian military officer, Tier’s mission is to destroy the bioengineering projects, kill Commander Coot’s daughter, and return home immediately. There’s just one problem. Junco isn’t who she claims to be.

With no one to trust, not even herself, Junco must confront the secrets of her past and accept her place in the future, or risk losing herself completely.

Review:   Going into this book, I was expecting something that was kind of far out, like in the universe wise.  But, instead we get a lot of action on Earth.  Right off the bat I loved Junco.  She is seriously as bad ass as they come.   She's someone that I would definitely want to have on my side in a bar fight, because I'm pretty sure she could take out five burly motorcycle dudes with one punch.  We meet her in weird circumstances, where it seems like she is trying to escape from something, but also trying to find something else.  When the jeep she was driving crashes, Tier an Avion (alien) who Junco first pegs as an enemy.  Through an epic chase through some really tall grass (I envisioned the scene from Jurassic Park 2 while they were trying to escape some velociraptors) Junco must decide between going with humans who are using her, or Tier and Avion who she knows is evil.  As the book progresses, we see Tier and Junco's relationship change to one where Junco tries to trust him (after a few murder attempts on his life) and we begin to see what hell Junco has lived through her whole life.

Let me just say this book was CRAZY.  Seriously, there was some ridiculous under handed shady stuff going on that I was definitely gaping over.  This book is fast paced to.  You might need a seat belt for the ride, because this story literally catapults you through what is going on in this crazy version of Earth.

Again, I really loved the character of Junco.  She is a born and trained killer, but J.A. Huss allows us to see humanity and emotion in her.  She brings out a realness in Junco that is needed because of who Junco was trained to be.  Plus the dynamic between her and Tier at the beginning of the book is hilarious.  I could easily identify with what each character was feeling, and it made me want what both of them wanted.

Over all this was a really great read.  I feel like there are some parts that were really confusing, but overall the idea behind the series is fantastic.  Plus the characters in the book were well done and not over or under developed.  A solid debut, can't wait to see what else Junco will get up to in the later books!
